Impregnating and sealing patio slabs outdoors: a guide

Why impregnate patio slabs?

Impregnating patio slabs offers numerous advantages.
It protects the surface from the penetration of liquids and dirt, extending the service life of the slabs.
Impregnation is particularly recommended for natural stone slabs, as these are particularly susceptible to stains and discoloration.
In this article, you will learn how to successfully impregnate or seal your patio slabs.

The difference: impregnating or sealing?

When it comes to patio slabs, the question often arises: impregnate or seal?
The main difference is that the impregnation penetrates deep into the pores of the stones and takes effect there. In addition, the surface remains breathable, which is particularly desirable in outdoor areas, as sealed stones can crack in frost, for example.

The sealant in turn forms a protective layer on the surface.
While sealants often form a water and dirt-repellent layer, the breathable function of the surfaces is not retained here.

Cleaning patio slabs before impregnation

Before you start impregnating the patio slabs, thorough cleaning is essential.
Thoroughly remove dirt, moss and algae from the surface of the patio slabs.
A high-pressure cleaner can be very effective here, but should be used with caution.
Followed by a cleaning agent selected according to the material.
Then allow the slabs to dry thoroughly, for at least 24 hours , before proceeding with impregnation or sealing.
This allows the surface protection to develop its maximum effect.

Removing weeds from the joints

An often forgotten detail in the maintenance of patio slabs is the removal of weeds from the joints.
You have the following options for removing weeds:

  1. Manually pull the weeds out of the joints.
  2. The use of a weed burner.
